Spiritual, But Not Religious? (with Father Thomas Keating)

Does the Divine Encompas all Hearts?

And that is precisely a problem (The Dialogue Project) for you seem to be mixing up various deities with God Himself. How do you explain that?

heart of the fatherA Client wanted me to paint  2 modern  icons, one image of the Heart of the Father, an anatomical drawing of a heart with rays coming from behind and the other a  complete text description thereof. The discussion which follows addresses the problems for new iconography and the Dialogue Project…………., as well as peace on earth.

Let me ask you a question: Why do you wish so much to do this icon?

I want to paint icons always with the hope of bringing people closer to God.  Even when painting modern icons the artist entices  people to come closer to God, through the beautiful image. We copy traditional images as doctrine and discipline as well as prayer. The painting of the image is considered service. Art and image bring people to a place of silence and the mystery within.

And that is precisely a problem (The Dialogue Project) for you seem to be mixing up various deities with God Himself. How do you explain that.

Ah, the Dialogue, wonderful. There is a  short 3 minute Video that explains the dialogue project.   http://www.sanmiguelicons.com/blog/wordpress/

Traditional icons are a gift the orthodox church has given to the world, a doctrine for their expression and commitment to unify the believers. The dialogue project opens us to the idea that there is not only one expression of God but many. I have used the orthodox tradition yes, with absolute respect. i use it as a vehicle pointing to the idea of world peace for us all, no more fighting over who is best or right, but rather remembering we are all children of God.

There is only one God, the Triune God. All others are false gods. It is precisely this underlying reasoning (below) that you present, the mixing with new age ideas, that has stopped me from commissioning you for the icon.

Do you think God holds in exile the Dali lama because he was not Baptized into your faith?Do you think God has a voice that judges us when we embrace all people that He created? The Eskimos worship a seal instead of the lamb as their symbol of humility, because they do not know what a lamb is. There is only love in the end and how we devote ourselves to that love, that is where we will be held accountable. Mankind has always be able to love only we get bogged down at times in who, how, why, when, where and all the judgment and prejudice involved in defending our love. Besides, if others do not see it our way what is the damage as loge as they do not condemn and judge, visa verse. so above so below.thank you for this discussion, it has helped me understand some of the limits we impose on the God we believe in. i have caused some turbulence within the orthodox tradition but my intent was never to offend only to allow.

I am not Orthodox, I am Catholic. My understanding of icons is that the painter’s spirituality is partly reflected in the icon, the finished product. Hence the reason I said the underlying spirituality you have repeatedly presented would be problematic. As for world peace, it will not come about until all nations accept the One, True, and Only God as their God and all other false idols are destroyed.

Spoken like a true Christian, remembering always we are all children of God and made in his image. The image of God is Mystery, contemplated and experienced and guided by doctrine. Those doctrines within all religions separate us by differences in understanding, not by essence. In the Dialogue project, i stress the idea; we be the best we can be with what we believe and question the value for what it is that makes us similar. ie the love of peace.

Actually here is where we disagree. The image of God is Mystery indeed. But that “doctrines within all religions separate us by differences in understanding not by essence” is incorrect. For the fullness of the Truth, hence the Faith, is only to be found in Catholicism, given its Divine foundation, unbroken Petrine succession, and maintenance by the Holy Spirit Himself through the authentic Magisterium. Even though elements of such Truth are to be found in other branches of Christianity such as, for examples, Orthodoxy and Protestantism. However other purported religions are not religions but simply constructions to confuse and deceive, by evil spirits parading themselves as angels of light instead of darkness.

I understand that you are trying to promote peace, which is laudable. However as I have already said, world peace will not ensue until all nations acknowledge that there is only One, True, and Only God.

The text that follows is the theology indicated in the above images the words of the Author not mine.

“Every time you venerate one of My images through a kiss or a hug, or even a glance of love, you atone for a multitude of blasphemies.”

“I want everyone to venerate My Divine Heart because it is the Heart of a Father who loves His children with Infinite Love. Anyone who adores My Divine Heart atones for a multitude of sins. It is through My Divine Heart that Mercy upon this world issues forth because My Heart is One with the Sacred Heart of My Son. Console My Divine Heart and repair from your hearts (…) In this manner, peace – My Peace – will come on earth. Joy, Happiness, and Love will reign in the world once more.”

“My Divine Heart is the Heart of a Father Who loves His children to folly (…) My Heart is open as a refuge for all men to come and rest in It as a haven from the cares and burdens of the world (…) I Am calling all people to My Heart (…)  I desire to be loved, honored, worshipped, and venerated by all My children (…) Do not deny your Father this plea: it is the plea of a Father Who loves you with Infinite Love.”

“I want everyone to know how much I love them and desire them to return to Me, their Eternal and Loving Father Who created them and gave them Life (…) I will accept anyone who comes to Me with a sincere heart (…) This Devotion is in atonement for all the blasphemies that have been committed against My Divine Heart (…) Many of the consequences of the Chastisement can be averted if (…you) pray sincerely and honestly to My Divine Heart.

“Whoever devoutly worships My Divine Heart pays Me homage: the homage that is My due and that has always been My due since the beginning of time. Venerating My Divine Heart consoles Me. It repairs for the tremendous agony and sorrow that I endure from My creation due to the multitude of its sins. True reparation calms My Wrath and consoles My Wounded Heart (…) Anyone who genuinely loves Me will console Me. Otherwise he will be responsible for having let the fullness of My Wrath fall upon mankind.”

Fathers day Icon

This image of the Christ Child in the arms of the Father, was inspired while at a retreat at the  Benedictine Monastery of the Soledad here in San Miguel.

All monks have renounced their blood father for a new life in community with other brothers, Christ as the head. It occurred to me, we all have two fathers, a spiritual one and our own from birth.

The image is also about Time and Space, form where do these relationships of father and child come form and go to.

The inspiration was taken form the famous Greek icons named “Mary of Kadiotissa”, classic portraits of Mary with the Christ child’s arms outstretched.
